In addition to being one of the most inspired musicians of the New York Free Jazz scene of the last thirty-two years, Daniel Carter also has the distinction of a much broader approach to music than many of his "energy music peers." "I was an aspiring anarchist. Not in the sense of disorder, everything is crazy in the street, violence, but in the sense of wanting to be myself as much as possible, and...sometimes you discover you're radically different in your procedure. You have no real desire to be radically different in your procedure, and to clash with the procedures of others or the methodologies of others, but I got to the point where I didn't want to be told what to do." Thankfully, Carter has pursued his musical vision with high integrity, resulting in some of the most beautiful music to come out of NYC in a long time. Anne Mette Iversen Quartet @ 3pm
Anne Mette Iversen is a member of the Brooklyn Jazz Underground and writes music that falls within various genres. She composes for strings, for choir and for brass instruments.She composed "Hvor er din bolig vidunderlig" for the 125 year anniversary of The Danish Church in New York. Also, she arranged the music when Denmark hosted 120 United Nations ambassadors, the General Secretary Kofi Annan and Crown Prince of Denmark, His Royal Highness Prince Frederik, to a dinner at the B.B. King Club in New York 2002.She composed "Rondo Alla Manipula" for 3 cello's which was exhibited at Charlotte Friis' exhibition "Storytelling Furniture" at The Danish Design Council in May & June 2005.

This Brooklyn group of unique musicians have created a truly post-modern yet beautifully melodic album incorporating diverse influences from 1960's free-bop, contemporary classical, funk and Chinese pop music.
Spoke's first album represents the culmination of a repertoire developed over years of playing together regularly. After forming in 2006 to play a regular Fort Greene restaurant gig, the ensemble quickly found a purpose in pursuing what one listener calls the "Art of the Compromise:" living in the intermediate territory between individual and collective improvisation, while retaining a sense of structure and tradition.

The Red Hook Jazz Festival June 10 and 17

Celebrating its fifth anniversary presenting the most forward-thinking musicians and composers in modern jazz, the Red Hook Jazz Festival, produced by big bang productions, will take place this year at its usual location, the Urban Meadow in Red Hook on two consecutive Sundays, June 10 and June 17 starting at 1 PM. Both days are sponsored as in years past by both the Urban Meadow and the venerable House of Pizza & Calzone which has also provided food and drinks for festival goers for many years. A suggested donation of $10 per adult per day for each day of the festival will be requested, and all children will be admitted free of charge.

HOW TO GET THERE: Take the 4/5 or 2/3 to Borough Hall, then take the B61 at Court & Atlantic Ave towards Red Hook/Ikea, then get off at the Carroll Street Stop, Walk to President Street and then towards the water and the crains until you hit the Meadow. Or take the F/G train to Carroll Street, then walk down Union Street to Columbia Street past the BQE overpass, make a left on Columbia Street to President St., then walk towards the Crains/Waterfront.

4th Annual Red Hook Jazz Festival in the URBAN MEADOW

Once again the Urban Meadow will be hosting the Red Hook Jazz Festival in June 2011. This is the fourth year of a homegrown jazz festival featuring an amazing line-up of mostly local talent. When we say local we mean they mostly live and work in NYC but these musicians regularly play all over the country and the world - and we love that they also play in their own backyard. The RHJF is known for great music, a laid back vibe, an outdoor setting, and family friendly good times. Adults pay $5 for 5 hours of music each day and kids are free.

Red Hook Jazz Fest at the Urban Meadow June 8 and 15

One of our great local events and organized by residents of the Columbia Waterfront District, the Red Hook Jazz Festival is this Sunday, June 8 at the Urban Meadow Community Garden, 1 pm - 6pm. David Adler, at the Village Voice jazz blog just called it One of the 10 Best Jazz Shows This Month and wrote that "The lineup seems to get better every year at the Red Hook Jazz Festival. These bands have widely varying instrumentation but a shared independent spirit, an ethic as purposeful and rigorous as it is experimental."

The shows will be this Sunday, June 8th and next Sunday June 15. Bring your picnic blankets and your kids and hang out to listen to some of the best music around! There's something for everyone - Time Out NY's listing says the Red Hook Jazz Festival is the "rare music fest that's both family-friendly and cutting-edge"

It's coming! Red Hook Jazz Festival - June 13th and 20th

Save the date - The Red Hook Jazz Festival is coming up in the Urban Meadow June 13th and June 20th from 1 PM- 5 PM both days. Suggested admission at the door is $5 for adults, kids are free. (All proceeds go to support the Urban Meadow garden and activities)

It will be two days of great music on the Columbia Street Waterfront, right under the cranes in a beautiful outdoor spot. Many of the musicians who'll be playing the RHJF live in Brooklyn - from Carroll Gardens to Park Slope to Ditmas Park, Brooklyn is represented (and there will even be a few guests from Manhattan!)

Brooklyn Waterfront Greenway Benefit on the Waterfront at Northside Piers!

Brooklyn Greenway Initiative (BGI) is thrilled to hold its New Views 2010 annual benefit for the Brooklyn Waterfront Greenway on the waterfront at Northside Piers in Williamsburg on Wednesday, June 23^rd from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

“Each year, we hold our benefit at a waterfront location along the route of the Greenway that affords new views or new perspectives of the waterfront that have been largely or completely inaccessible to the public,” said Brian McCormick, Development Director and one of the three co-founders of BGI. “It is therefore fitting that the recently completed and soon to open public esplanade at Northside Piers will be the setting for this year’s benefit.”

Brooklyn Greenway Initiative is a 501 (c) 3 non-profit coordinating the planning, implementation and long term stewardship of the Brooklyn Waterfront Greenway, a 14-mile waterfront bicycle and pedestrian route stretching from Greenpoint to Bay Ridge. This year, using funding secured by Congresswoman Nydia Velázquez, BGI is working with the New York City Department of Transportation on a Master Plan for the entire 14-mile route of the Greenway.

According to Milton Puryear, Director of Project Development and co-founder of BGI, the Northside Piers public waterfront, coupled with the Kent Avenue segment of the Greenway, represents a major new piece of the Greenway puzzle now emerging. In total, 4 miles of protected bicycle lanes are available for use by the public and more is on the way.

In addition to hosting BGI’s benefit, Northside Piers will sponsor a membership in Brooklyn Greenway Initiative for all new residents of Two Northside Piers, which is now open for sale and nearing completion.

“We are pleased to offer the future residents of Northside Piers membership in Brooklyn Greenway Initiative so that they can learn about and support the exciting new waterfront connections”, said David Von Spreckelsen, Senior Vice President of Toll Brothers City Living, Northside Piers’ developer.

This year’s honorees for New Views 2010 are Lorraine Cortés-Vázquez, New York State Secretary of State and Neighbors Allied for Good Growth (NAG). The New York State Department of State (NYS DOS) Division of Coastal Resources under Title 11 of the Environmental Protection Fund has provided three successive rounds of funding for planning the Brooklyn Waterfront Greenway, each sponsored by Borough President Marty Markowitz.

NAG, a Williamsburg non-profit, will receive BGI’s Community Partner of the Year award. NAG is a pioneering volunteer based community planning and environmental justice organization that has been performing grassroots organizing, advocacy and outreach/education to the North Brooklyn waterfront community of Williamsburg/Greenpoint since 1994.

“It is these partnerships that have propelled the Greenway forward and we are glad to take this opportunity to say ‘Thanks!’” said BGI Director of Programs and co-founder Meg Fellerath.

Guests of New Views 2010 will get a preview of this spectacular waterfront setting while they enjoy a summer buffet and the “hot and sweet” jazz music of Michael Arenella. BGI will be also be raffling off three bicycles, compliments of Trek Bikes and Bespoke Bicycles, tickets for a party of 10 at New York Water Taxi Beach at South Street Seaport, tickets for 4 on the Zephyr and Shark and a personal fitness training session compliments of Annette Lang Education. Con Edison will be providing a continuous shuttle bus loop from the L and G subway stations in Williamsburg to Northside Piers.

BWAC's Spring Pier Show opens 5/9

the Color of HOPE

May 9 – June 14, weekends only, 1 – 6PM

Named to reflect the resilience and enduring spirit of art in our lives, the Color of Hope, BWAC’s 17^th Annual Spring Art Show at the Pier will display the interpretation of hope in 1600 new works from over 300 BWAC members.

Opening weekend festivities include a Meet the Artists reception on Saturday, 5/9, with music by The Loose Marbles, a traditional New Orleans street band, 3PM. The celebration continues on Sunday, with jazz guitarist Ron Jackson.

Featured artist for this show is Renee Radenberg, who creates objects of beauty of recycled scrap glass and metal.

Crowds flock to the Meadow's Egg Hunt!

And they're off!

Today's 2nd Annual Egg Hunt at the Urban Meadow was a success!
2 hunts, 1 bunny, 500 eggs, 144 balloons, 100 painted cheeks, dozens of goodies and t-shirts sold, wow!!

This was a community event, put together by volunteers (mostly neighborhood parents), paid for by local businesses and donations, in a community garden.

Thank you so much to everyone that helped make this happen!
