Support Dimattina Dog Park!

A message from Carroll Gardens DOG about the next steps for getting Dimattina Dog park rennovated:

Dear Dog Park Friends,

We are close to securing the necessary funding for renovating the dog park. Will you take a minute to send an email to Councilman Lander or Assemblywoman Joan Millman? Your message should be short indicating your appreciation for their support for the renovation of the dog run at DiMattina Park.

Lander's e-mail: MFreedman-schapp { at } council.nyc.gov or Fax 212.788.8967
Millman's e-mail: Millmaj { at } assembly.state.ny.us

We can't emphasize enough the critical nature of these support letters since the capital budget item vote and inclusion into the 2011 budget is being decided now.

Our dogs deserve a safe dog park! Please send an email this week!

Good news for dogs (and their owners)

According to Gowanus Lounge, dogs are now allowed to be let off of their leash in Coffey Park (during certain hours, in certain areas, and if well trained of course).

Here are the details:
1. All dogs must be vaccinated and registered with the city
2. All dogs must be under voice command, meaning they will come when the owner calls
3. No aggression toward humans or other dogs will be tolerated
4. If a police officer or parks representative requests that the dogs be put on leash, owners must comply
5. Dogs are *not* allowed to harass other park users
6. Dogs are *not* allowed in the basketball courts or the playground areas. They are only to be in the grassy area of the park
7. Generally, the dogs are to be off-leash only in the quadrant located at Richards and Verona Streets. This is not an official rule, as we want flexibility to move during barbecuing season or for other events. But dog owners have agreed to keep their group activities generally within this location so that other users can plan their activities
8. From 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., there are to be no dogs off the leash. Police officers will be ticketing heavily if they see dogs off leash during the day
9. Dogs are not to dig in the flower beds or otherwise disturb the flora of the park
10. Owners *must* clean up after their dogs. We will all be keeping a watchful eye in order to keep our park clean for everyone

Also, their post mentions the Red Hook Dog Association. If anyone knows more about them, please comment or email, because they have very little web presence that I can find.

Missing: Mango- The Key Lime Pie Pooch

Local dog Mango, often seen roaming around on Columbia street near Degraw or by Steve's Key Lime Pie down on Pier 41, seems to have been stolen. Please spread the word and keep your eyes out for him. As a dog owner myself, this type of thing is very frightening.

Below is a message from his owner, Steve of keylime pie fame:

WANTED: MANGO
Mango was Nabbed outside of Jake’s BBQ on Saturday, 11-22,
around 7:00 PM, on the corner of Columbia and Degraw
streets, while innocently waiting a piece of cornbread. Blue
mini-van may have been involved.

Intact male 10-years old. White body, rich brown ears, lighter
brown “mango” on left jaw and dark brown under left ear.

We are seeking the return to his rightful master and his place in the pie kingdom.
We seek the return of our beloved mascot, constant sidekick, canine friend and
family member for the past 9-years. He answers to his name and to verify his identity,
just ask him “where’s the rat?” If he doesn’t respond, it isn’t him. If you do see
him, please try and note when, where and with who. If you are certain it is him you
can always call 311, but least call any of these numbers with your information 718-
288-0853, 718-858-5333, 917-280-6505, 646-431-8177. If one of your neighbors is
suddenly walking a new seasoned dog that looks like him, it very well could be him.
We appreciate your help.
