Ok... yes... we may be a little frustrated that the library is scheduled to be closed for about a month this summer (it is posted that it will close at the end of business on June 7th and re-open on July 8th), but truly it provides so many community benefits that certainly it deserves to be nominated for a chance to receive the $10,000 award!

Brooklyn Greenway Initiative's Annual Summer Benefit - Surf + Turf + Earth

Brooklyn Greenway Initiative's Annual Summer Benefit is scheduled for Wednesday, June 26, 2013 from 6:00pm - 9:00pm at the Liberty Warehouse in Red Hook. Tickets start at $150 (till June 15th) and the event's website touts:

Cora Dance announces Spring Swing Benefit Bash

LAUNCHES A $100,000 CAPITAL CAMPAIGN!

Benefit Date: Saturday, May 7 at 7pm

Cora, which includes the professional company, Shannon Hummel/Cora Dance, and the educational outgrowth of that company, Cora School for Dance will be kicking off a $100,000 capital campaign in support of our new spaces and expanded programs at SPRING SWING, Cora's 14th Annual Benefit Bash and Silent Auction. Spring Swing will take place on Saturday, May 7 at 7pm on the rooftop of Rocky Sullivan's Bar and Restaurant, 34 Van Dyke Street at the corner of Dwight Street in Red Hook, Brooklyn. The evening will feature catered food by Daniel Eardley/Knife for Hire (former head chef of Chestnut); neighborhood favorite The Good Fork (head chef, Sohui Kim); and many others. The night includes a silent auction, presentation for benefit honorees Donna Costello and Sara Coffey, and swinging french dance hall music by Primitivo.

Tickets for the Bash are sliding scale ($20-$100), and can be purchased at the door or in advance by visiting www.coradance.org. Those purchasing $100 tickets in advance are invited to a VIP champagne swing dance lesson at 6:30pm. Funds raised from the benefit go toward the recent expansion and relocation to 1500 square feet of studio and office spaces in Red Hook Brooklyn that will serve as home to the professional company Shannon Hummel/Cora Dance and the pay-what-you-can programs of the Cora School in Red Hook.

The Good Fork celebrates Added Value

The hail storm on October 11th devastated much of The Red Hook Community Farm/Added Value's harvest and damaged the green house. The Good Fork restaurant in Red Hook is serving a special 4-course menu on Wednesday, November 3 to help raise money to rebuild Added Value.

Salsa Sensation, La Excelencia, Remembers New York Roots

International stars donate concert to support community-based arts in Brooklyn

“When I first heard La Excelencia’s 2006 debut album, Salsa Con Conciencia, I remember feeling as if I had been struck on the head with a pair of clave and thinking: ‘Yes! This is what salsa is all about.’” So says Tijana Illich, Latin music journalist, about her first run in with the 12-piece powerhouse being called “the most sought after group in New York” (Chris Soto, The Mambo Scene Magazine).

The band, started in 2005 by Julian Silva and Jose Vazquez-Cofresi, comes to Southpaw (125 Fifth Ave., Brooklyn) May 4^th for a benefit party & concert (6:30pm). Their work their will support arts education programs for over 700 students run by Dance Theatre Etcetera, a community-based organization with a 17-year history of programming in Red Hook, Brooklyn.

These young musicians bring an urban edge to their socially conscious lyrics, and a no-frills, old-school sound that has some calling them the face of the salsa dura (“hard salsa”) movement. When their first album dropped the New York Times took note, saying "The real deal doesn’t show up that often, and here it is. Celebrate it".

So what made the group donate a free set when they’re in demand throughout the world? Like the music, it’s about giving something back. Not only will the band help a new generation of New Yorkers get access to the arts with their benefit concert, the men behind the band have reached out, through Dance Theatre Etcetera, to schedule a special workshop/performance with students at Red Hook’s South Brooklyn Community High School.
