RED HOOK STOP ON CITYWIDE FERRY SERVICE ANNOUNCED

RED HOOK CITYWIDE FERRY SERVICE

Yesterday, the de Blasio Administration and the New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) announced that one of the 21 Citywide Ferry Service's stops will be located at Atlantic Basin. The Red Hook Ferry Landing will be on one of five routes, the South Brooklyn route, that are due to start launching next summer, with all routes expected to be fully operational by Summer 2018.

Fares will be equal to the price of one subway ride, $2.75, with free transfers to any other ferry route within the system. The Mayor's office estimates the ferry service will generate at least 155 new jobs in the New York Harbor.

Changes on Columbia Street

We're seeing some new businesses opening soon in the Waterfront District, and one sudden and sad closure.

First, the good news.
The long-closed Waterfront Restaurant
space will soon be a new diner called
Water's Edge Diner.

We hope it will be a 24-hour diner!

What WILL be open 24 hours is a new
bagel shop on Summit and Hamilton.
New signage was posted this week and
a neighbor says the opening is imminent.

I also recently passed by the space on Union and Hicks which housed
The Coffee Den (RIP). A few gentlemen were seated around the bar tasting wines, and they told me the bar will have an excellent wine list and will be opening
"soon."

And I'm told the space on Columbia St next to Margaret Palca will be a ballet school!

The windows were uncovered last week to reveal the interior. It looks almost ready to open!

And the sad news. Many of you know that Moonshine's last night will be September 17. The bar's owner wanted to move on. Rumor has it that the new owner plans to keep the space a bar but with a new look and new staff. We will miss the friendly bartenders and unpretentious, friendly community that gathers there. The Columbia Street News wants your stories,  photos, and memories for a tribute they are putting together. Send them to columbiastreetnews <at> gmail <dot> com.

If you have more of a scoop on these openings and closings than I do, please share in the comments.

So many things happening for Valentine's Day!

Dear readers,

Many of you might have noticed that we have been a little off the radar these past couple of months. We apologize for that, and our only excuse is that real life tends to get in the way. It's all about priorities, right?

Anyhoo, let's catch up on lost time with several posts about how to celebrate Valentine's Day in the neighborhood.

Happy Anniversary - to us!!!!!

One year ago, on May 19th, 2008, we started this blog as a way to get involved in the community and fill what we found to be a void in blogging in the neighborhood. While many blogs occasionally touched on the slice of Brooklyn we call home, none were entirely dedicated to it or took a look at it from a non-business standpoint.

Now, one year and many posts later, we're proud to say that we've met a lot of great people, learned a lot, and had a lot of fun. We're also glad that we've been able to get involved in addressing local issues, organize events for families and children, and support local businesses and artists. We hope that we've enabled other local residents to do all of the above as well.

Whether you've been reading since the beginning or just recently discovered us, we appreciate you taking the time to both read what we have to say and to take interest in our community. Keep checking back in!

Special thanks to anyone who's ever given us their time, input, and ideas, or helped spread the word about us, including local residents, businesses, local organizations, artists, fellow bloggers, and of course anyone that reads and comments!

We're also proud to say that we've been nominated as one of the best local blogs by Nickelodeon's Go City Kids website. If you feel like lending us a hand, head over to this link and vote for us (up to once a day).

Thanks,
Chris and Jessie

Red Hook in the news

(image from AM New York)

Below are a couple of links to articles about Red Hook that I've been meaning to post this week:

Virtual Neighborhood Tour
On 9/18/08, AM New York ran an article all about Red Hook which contained some history as well as a listing of restaurants, stores, things to do, and more. Check it out here.

The Real Red Hook Real World?
Also featured in a number of publications this week was talk of a new TV pilot that aired at the New York Television Festival called "Red Hook High." It seems the show aims to be as realistic as possible and actually uses local teens as the main characters - even allowing them to have input in the writing and character development. If its truly done right, I hope a network will pick it up so we, the general public can see it. Here's what the NYTimes and ABC News had to say.

The Neighborhood in the News

Two stories that take place in the CSWD made it into this week's edition of The Brooklyn Paper.

1) "Green on Presdient Street"
The Brooklyn Paper's coverage of the newly opened Urban Meadow Bklyn. We'll be posting up our pictures of the opening event soon, but in the meantime take a look at this article.

2) "Columbia Street wants normalcy"
Could Columbia St. construction finally be nearing the end? The Brooklyn paper gives an update as well as points out recent concerns over garbage on the street and bus routes
