Membership is a paltry $25/year per household and membership requires a monthly gardening committment as well as a few other various requirements to keep the meadow functioning.

According to their website - two opportunities to renew or join are offered below:

The First Spring Membership meeting: Sunday, April 6, 1 PM - The House of Pizza and Calzone, 132 Union Street bet. Hicks and Columbia

The First Spring Garden Clean Up will be Sunday, April 13 10 AM-12 PM at the Urban Meadow (President St at Van Brunt) - there will be another meeting and orientation after the clean up from 12:30-1:30.

Support Liberty Green by signing the petition

DISCLAIMER: The text below comes from the Liberty Sunset Garden Center, not WOCS. Please read it and judge for yourself whether it is worth signing. The statement released by the landlord in response can be read here.
---------------
Due to devastating economic instability, Liberty Green NY Inc. can no longer financially afford to remain at its present location on Pier 41 and must vacate on March 31, 2011 or before. It hopes to find a new location so that its remarkable collection of plants, trees and flowers can survive along with its educational and environmental programs.

Friends of Liberty Green NY Inc. and residents of Red Hook and surrounding communities, are asking that Liberty Green NY INC. be granted an extension till May 31, 2011 to find an available and suitable new location where it can continue to serve Red Hook and the Brooklyn community as a whole.

So follow this link to support them.

First Weeding Day at The Meadow: A Success!

Yesterday, Sunday, was our first weeding day at the Urban Meadow. The weather was beautiful, the volunteers were numerous and so were the kids. In two and a half hours we were able to clean out the flower area of all the dead plants leaving room for the young flowers.

Thank you so much for coming out.

However the work is not over. Next week we will be working again marking a path and places for shrubs, and weeding some more. We will be there every Sunday from 10am to 12pm, so don't hesitate to walk over and give us a hand.

Here are some pictures from yesterday:

Save your tree until Mulch Fest 2009

On 1/10/09, the NYC Dept. of Sanitation will be holding Mulch Fests (or "treecylcing" events) at various locations throughout Brooklyn, where they will be collecting Christmas trees for the purpose of converting them to mulch. This mulch will then be used around NYC for parks, trees, etc. In some locations, you can even watch the conversion live!

This is definitely the best way to go for the environment. Why not hold onto that tree just a little bit longer and put it to use for the environment and city residents, instead of sending it to a landfill?

The nearest locations for this neighborhood will be:
Amazing Garden
Cobble Hill Park
Coffey Park

Click this link for details

This just in: Amazing Garden will actually be open every day from today (1/3/09) through next weekend for people to drop off trees. Now there are no excuses.
