South Brooklyn Children's Garden Harvest Festival

So much autumnal fun happening in Columbia Waterfront this month! The South Brooklyn Children's Garden is having their third annual Harvest Festival this Saturday Oct. 25 from 10:00am to 1:00pm. (Rain date Sunday, October 26.) The festival will include pumpkin decorating, crafts, educational tables, hay bale rides, an apple press, and music from the Dad Beats. There will be a pie contest at 12:00, with a winner crowned at 12:30. Bakers are invited to bring pies to be judged by a panel of dignitary judges. The winner will receive a free 2015 garden membership with no watering duties or a case of wine and bragging rights!

Eat Pie and Shop at P.S.29 December 8

On Sunday December 8th, PS 29 is hosting its fifth annual Eat Pie and Shop holiday event. It's a pie social, celebrity-judged pie contest, artisan gift fair, professional portrait studio and children's activity (face painting, kids' choice pie contest, batiking) wrapped into one awesome family event.

Pie Social: Taste delicious homemade and premium pies for $5 a slice or 5 for $20. Both sweet and salty options, so come for lunch and desert. Plus frozen custard from Shake Shack.
Celebrity-judged pie contest: At 1pm, Gail Simmons, judge of “Top Chef,” Melissa Clark, food columnist for the New York Times and other kitchen pros will name the best pie of the pie contest. Come toast the winner and taste the winning pie.
Artisan Holiday Gift Fair: Take care of your holiday shopping while the kids do crafts. More than 30 vendors from Brooklyn flea markets will be displaying and selling their handmade goods, including jewelry, clothing and beautiful paper products as well as books and classic toys from fork + pencil.
Children's Crafts and Activities: Face painting, glitter tattoos, batiking and a Kids Choice pie contest of kid baked pies.
Professional Portrait Studio: You can get a portrait of your child/children taken during the event. $30 for one high-resolution image which you can print, email, gift to grandparents, etc.
* Toys for Tots: U.S. Marines will be on hand to pick up all donations of holiday gifts.

Red Hook Fest (May 30 - June 1) Begins Festivities Tonight!



This evening kicks off the festivities for the 20th Annual Red Hook Fest

This free 20th annual festival's theme and truly Red Hook's undercurrent in the past months has been "Rebuild, Restore, Rebirth: Resilience after Sandy."  The annual Red Hook Earth and Surf Parade has even been reborn this year - after an 11 year lull! Festivity Lineup:
  • Thursday, May 30th from 6pm - 8pm at the Miccio Center (110 West 9th St) - Youth Kick-Off Event
  • Friday, May 31st from 6pm - 9pm at PS 15 (71 Sullivan St)  - Community BBQ & Dance Party
  • Red Hook Rebirth Parade begins from Coffey Park (Richards St & Pioneer St) at 10 am on Saturday, June 1st  

The mainstage performances will take place at Valentino Pier & Park and the festival will include special activities such as free Kayak rides in New York Harbor thanks to the Red Hook Boaters and other various fun and activities for all ages sponsored by community partners.

Karen K & the Jitterbugs Sing-along at the Children's Garden


Next Thursday, Karen K & the Jitterbugs will be doing a special sing-a-long at the South Brooklyn Children's Garden, 204 Columbia Street (corner of Sackett and Columbia Streets)

Karen K & the Jitterbugs have been delighting families up and down the east coast since the release of their debut album, Pancakes for Dinner, last year. Donned "The Kiddie Queen" by the Brooklyn Paper, Karen K's well-crafted, catchy tunes combined with the band's high-energy highly-entertaining shows make them rising stars on the "kindie" music scene - a term coined for the blend of kids music and indie rock.

Karen K and her Jitterbugs have been featured in the New York Times and in New York Magazine's Best of New York 2011 issue. They were also chosen as a Critics' Picks in Time Out New York Kids. Urban Meadow Planning Meeting


The Urban Meadow community garden is holding its first planning and membership meeting of the year. Renew memberships or join, get information about the season, help plan events and activities.


The Urban Meadow, on the corner of President and Van Brunt, hosts lots of fun events like jazz concerts, yoga classes, and Easter egg hunts. It's the backyard you always wish you had.

Where to take your children when it's cold out.

The area offers a nice variety of indoor play spaces, and parents know how important it is for everyone's sanity to leave the house at least once a day!

Here are some:

AUNT BEE’S BACKYARD
Formerly known as Bija Backyard, this indoor playroom is perfect for infants and young toddlers. In this cushy and clean environment, your baby can crawl, cruise, wobble, and hop. The Backyard offers climbing equipment with slides, a playhouse, a ball pen, a reading corner, dolls, cars, puzzle and more. They also offer baby sign language, music classes, yoga for toddlers, and a preschool enrichment program.

The wonderful team from Everyday Athlete Studio offers Open Play during which children can play with toys, but also practice tumbling moves under the supervision of coach Mason and Michelle. This is a perfect location for active toddlers and older kids. THE MOXIE SPOT
This is a restaurant/playroom. The food is forgettable, but the space, the toys, the books, the computers, the art supplies make up for it. They also offer classes and special events, such as family movie nights on Fridays, family disco parties every second Saturday, or family bingo nights on Sundays.

THE NEIGHBORHOOD PLAYSPACE at CHRIST CHURCH
The Neighborhood Playspace is a beautiful playroom. Ideal for toddlers up to 5 years-old. It is clean and somewhat old school.
Location: in the Parish Hall of Christ Church on Clinton and Kane Streets in Cobble Hill. Regular Hours: 9:30-12 Mon-Fri, ask about afternoons.

NEW YORK CITY EXPLORERS
It is not as cosy as Aunt Bee's or Everyday Athlete Kids, but it is a nice change. This indoor playspace features safe wooden toys and games and plenty of space to run, jump, and dance. It used to have cleanliness issues, but they now close for an hour at midday to keep up. They also offer many other activities, such as a preschool enrichment program.

One of my faovite places to go. This past Fall we have seen An American Tail, Barbapapa, Stuart Little and Grinch Stole Xmas, among others.
