Garden Party Fundraiser for Brad Lander Tuesday evening

Neighbor Wylie Goodman shared this invite to a garden party fundraiser for Brad Lander. We here at Word on Columbia Street are big fans of Councilperson Lander and hope some of you can spring for a ticket for this special event.

Here is Wylie's message:
After working for three years for Partnerships for Parks, volunteering with Participatory Budgeting, and becoming more involved with our Community Board, I've come to appreciate what it means to have a Councilperson like Brad Lander on our side as a community. Brad is smart, hard-working, and, most importantly, dedicated to progressive causes and to improving the quality of life of the residents he serves.
He helped fund the renovation of the DiMattina Dog Run.  He’s long supported the Brooklyn Greenway Initiative.  He spearheaded Participatory Budgeting, which allows locals to meaningfully contribute to capital projects for their community.  He’s helped foster the growth of our neighborhood’s small businesses. He’s advocated consistently and diligently for the creation of affordable housing.  And that’s just the beginning.
On July 15th, there will be a garden party and fundraiser for Brad in honor of his 45th birthday.  Tickets are $100.  I know that may be a lot for some people.  It was for me, too. But in the end, I decided that all politics is local.  And if you want to have a voice in the politics of your community, you need to be at the table with the people who are representing on your behalf.
If you can afford that amount, please consider attending what should be a truly special event.  And when you register, tell them you were referred by me.  I decided to go a step further and serve on the Host Committee.

Here are details on the event and how to RSVP:

Brooklyn Winery to Host April 7th Greenway Benefit!

Spring is finally just around the corner, and Brooklyn Greenway Initiative (BGI) is celebrating the season with a “Spring in Kings” party on Thursday, April 7th at the new Brooklyn Winery. BGI is the 501 c 3 non-profit organization planning for the Brooklyn Waterfront Greenway and its long-term stewardship.

“It is our honor and pleasure to host the Brooklyn Waterfront Greenway spring fundraiser,” said Brooklyn Winery co-founder Brian Leventhal. “The greenway is one of the great projects that is making Brooklyn, and more specifically Williamsburg, a better place to live. I used the bike lanes along Kent Avenue last spring and summer and I am excited to see them expanded.”

Brooklyn Winery is an urban winery based in Williamsburg that allows people to make their own wine from crushing their grapes to bottling. This unique experience includes hands-on wine making instruction from wine maker Conor McCormack. Brooklyn Winery's first house wines (Riesling, Chardonnay and Rosé) will be released this May.

The April 7th greenway party will surely be a rousing good time, where guests will enjoy wine (of course!), house hors d’oeuvres, Brooklyn Brewery beer and live music. Brooklyn Winery’s expansive interior courtyard will also be open to celebrate the arrival of spring.

An array of unique Brooklyn-themed raffle items will be featured, including a Brooklyn Historical Society family membership, gift certificates to Brooklyn Winery and Film Biz Prop Shop, your own custom designed hat from Hats by Nadege, a bicycle necklace crafted by Karen Overton and more!

Guests will also learn about the BGI & Recycle-A- Bicycle (RAB) collaborative project engaging students from International High School in the greenway planning process. RAB bicycle jewelry, including bracelets from inner tubes, earrings & necklaces from small bicycle parts will be on sale to support this joint endeavor.

Brooklyn Winery’s unique décor was created from salvaged and reclaimed materials. Brian McCormick, BGI co-founder and Director of Development said, “After visiting the Brooklyn Winery space, we knew it would be ideal for our spring benefit. It’s warm and homey with an old world feel.”

“The bonus,” continued McCormick, “is that the Brooklyn Winery is practically a stone’s throw from the Greenway, which is a great example of the entrepreneurial vitality and vision taking root as new businesses open in neighborhoods near the Greenway route”.

“Spring in Kings” takes place Thursday, April 7th, 6:00-9:00PM at Brooklyn Winery, 213 North 8th Street, Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Advance tickets are $50 through April 3rd (extended from previous date of 3/31) at www.brooklyngreenway.org.

“Eat Pie and Shop” at PS29’s Annual Holiday Fair/Pie Social Pie! Shopping! Movies! Crafts!

On December 5 from 11am to 5pm, PS 29 in Cobble Hill, Brooklyn, will host the second annual “Eat Pie and Shop” Holiday Gift Fair and Pie Social, to benefit the school. Proceeds from this family-friendly Holiday event will support the school’s PTA.

The Pie Social is sure to be a delicious and entertaining afternoon event with local bakers – both amateurs and professionals – supplying a wide array of pies. For a $5 tasting ticket the public can sample a piece of pie of their choosing. Be assured this event is not only for those with a sweet tooth, the pies will cover all categories including fruit, creamy, savory and nut, so shoppers can come to shop, eat lunch and get dessert!

The pie competition will be an afternoon highlight. Bakers are invited to bring pies to be judged by parents and a panel of celebrity judges. The panel will include Gail Simmons, Food & Wine and “Top Chef,” Dannielle Kyrillos, “Top Chef: Just Desserts,” François Payard, co-owner of François Payard Bakery, François Chocolate Bar and Payard, and Brooklyn’s own Borough President, Marty Markowitz. The winner will receive a gift package from Food & Wine, a Payard Gift Box and Silver Pie Server donated by Fork & Pencil and bragging rights for the year! Judging will take place at 1pm.

The Gift Fair will highlight local artisans, craftspeople and merchants, and promises to provide a huge variety of handmade, local and sustainable gift-giving choices, from jewelry, to clothing from Half Pint Citizens to hand made and classic toys from Fork & Pencil. More than twenty different vendors will be displaying and selling their wares.

And while you shop, Rooftop Films will show a selection of independent short films for kids continually throughout the day. Tickets to the movies are $2. In addition, children can make free holiday crafts – perhaps an ornament, sachet or a frame as a present for Mom and Dad. To quench their thirst, kids and adults can both enjoy delicious and refreshing egg creams from Brooklyn Farmacy.

Melanie Raneri Woods, Principal of PS 29, said, “We are thrilled to host the second annual Eat Pie and Shop event. The event was such an amazing success last year and I am positive this year’s will be even bigger. It’s refreshing in the midst of all the holiday craze to have an event where children and adults can spend some time together and at the same time support the fabulous efforts of our school community.”

Eat Pie and Shop will be held on Sunday, December 5, from 11am to 5pm, at PS 29, 425 Henry Street, between Baltic and Kane Street. For more information on the event, including a list of all vendors and information on how to enter a pie, please visit www.eatpieandshop.org.
