Pumpkin SMASH this week!


Don’t Trash Your Pumpkin! Smash It to Green After Halloween! Until November 7th, the SBCG and the NYC Compost Project invites community members of all ages to bring their jack-o-lanterns and decorative gourds to Pumpkin Smash 2014.

Two plastic barrels have been setup in front of the garden. Please bring buy your pumpkins, whenever you are free and throw it into one of the barrels.

The barrels will be emptied next week into our reinforced 3-bin compost bin, which will be open for community composting all winter!

South Brooklyn Children's Garden Harvest Festival

So much autumnal fun happening in Columbia Waterfront this month! The South Brooklyn Children's Garden is having their third annual Harvest Festival this Saturday Oct. 25 from 10:00am to 1:00pm. (Rain date Sunday, October 26.) The festival will include pumpkin decorating, crafts, educational tables, hay bale rides, an apple press, and music from the Dad Beats. There will be a pie contest at 12:00, with a winner crowned at 12:30. Bakers are invited to bring pies to be judged by a panel of dignitary judges. The winner will receive a free 2015 garden membership with no watering duties or a case of wine and bragging rights!

The Summit Street Community Garden at the corner of Summit and Columbia streets will host its second annual Fall Bulb Bake Band Bonanza on Saturday, October 18 from 10 am–4 pm. Buy flower bulbs for your garden while enjoying snacks and music in the community garden. Baked goods and a selection of bulbs—including daffodils, tulips and crocuses—will be for sale, with all proceeds benefiting the garden. Live music from jazz-rock fusion trio City Samanas begins at 2 pm. Admission is free. The rain date for the event is Sunday, October 19.

Story time and music at Summit Street Garden Sunday afternoon


Please bring yourselves and your little ones by Summit Street Garden tomorrow from 1:30pm - 2:30pm for story time and music making!

Children's librarian and garden member Andrea Vaughn Johnson (that would be me!) will perform a story time beginning at 1:30pm. Story time will be followed by an interactive music class for the children led by Sesame Street bass player and garden member, Rob Jost. The music class will be suitable for children of all ages.

This will be a very informal event for garden members and our community at large; simply some Sunday neighborhood fun. Bring a blanket and your favorite little ones (and if they have an instrument, bring it along!).

BBBB Bonanza at Summit Garden this Saturday!

The Summit Street Garden is planning a BBBB Bonanza! That would be a Bluegrass Blues Bulb Bake Bonanza! 
Summit Garden is selling bulbs for your garden and baked goodies at their Fall Fundraiser event this Saturday
, September 28th 9:30am-4:30pm. (Rain date is Sunday, September 29th.) Enjoy your cookies with live Bluegrass music in the garden at 2pm.

Amazing Garden's Best Grilled Sandwich Competition Sept 7

Next weekend, get yourself down to the Amazing Garden on Saturday, September 7th for their THIRD annual grilled sandwich competition!

How it works: three chefs compete for the title of best grilled sandwich (meat) and best grilled sandwich (vegetarian).
This year's competitors: Lauren Rauh (Iris Cafe), Josh Kaplan (Dassara), and Morgan Jarrett (Nightingale 9). As sandwiches come off the grill, ticketholders get to sample them and vote on which was tastiest.

Entry: $15. It's a fundraiser, and all revenues will be used for maintenance and repairs of one of the most popular community gardens in our part of Brooklyn.

Benefits: continuous delicious food, live music, and beverages courtesy of Brooklyn Farmacy.

Time: 3 pm, Saturday September 7th

Location: The Amazing Garden, at the corner of Carroll St. & Columbia St. in Brooklyn.

South Brooklyn Children's Garden Bug Fest

The South Brooklyn Children’s Garden (SBCG) announces its inaugural bug festival,Saturday, July 20, 2013, from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. This SBCG public event will celebrate bugs for the central role that they play in the environment and in the SBCG garden. This event is open to the public and free.
“As our plants mature during July, bugs are standing room only in the garden. There's no better time than now to demonstrate the importance of bugs in the garden and food cycle," said garden founder Shannon Mulholland. “We are looking forward to inviting the neighborhood into our garden to learn about bugs and to enjoy all the garden has to offer."

Bug Festival activities will include:
Bug Costume Contest and Parade at 12 noon
Lady Bug and Praying Mantis Release
Butterfly Exploration
Arts and Crafts
Live music by The Dad Beats
Food will be provided by Margaret Palca Bakes, Italian ices by House of Pizza.

According to their bulletin board the next meeting and work day is Sunday June 9th at 11am and their meeting poster says that anyone wishing to be a member can attend the meeting and sign up on the spot afterwards. Here are links to their blog and facebook page.

The Backyard Community Garden is actively soliciting for new members for empty plots. Members requirements and sign up info can be requested currently from Tom Kerr (347) 661-9728 - Garden membership coordinator. One of their members has set up a lovely blog and they hope to increase membership this year.

We truly have so much green space in this neighborhood compared to other parts of NYC - so get out there and

Karen K & the Jitterbugs Sing-along at the Children's Garden


Next Thursday, Karen K & the Jitterbugs will be doing a special sing-a-long at the South Brooklyn Children's Garden, 204 Columbia Street (corner of Sackett and Columbia Streets)

Karen K & the Jitterbugs have been delighting families up and down the east coast since the release of their debut album, Pancakes for Dinner, last year. Donned "The Kiddie Queen" by the Brooklyn Paper, Karen K's well-crafted, catchy tunes combined with the band's high-energy highly-entertaining shows make them rising stars on the "kindie" music scene - a term coined for the blend of kids music and indie rock.

Karen K and her Jitterbugs have been featured in the New York Times and in New York Magazine's Best of New York 2011 issue. They were also chosen as a Critics' Picks in Time Out New York Kids. Summit Street Community Garden Spring meeting Sunday

One of our local community gardens is getting ready for the 2013 season with a meeting on Sunday morning. Summit Street Community Garden, on the corner of Summit and Columbia, has friendly members and fun events and parties. Here's the info:

Summit Street Community Garden will hold the first meeting of the season this Sunday, April 7th at 11 a.m. Current garden members and interested community members are welcome and encouraged to attend.

On the agenda:
Welcome new members
Treasury report
Gardening, maintenance and work days
Open hours
Box usage, membership, Green Thumb info
Composting
Events
Job sign-up
Anything else that needs discussing

The meeting will be followed by an optional work day and walk through for new members. Looks like the weather will be beautiful! We look forward to spending some of it together in such a calming and beautiful space. See you there!

The Urban Meadow on President Street is hosting two membership meetings soon for the next season! Check out their blog to see all the perks of membership.

Saturday March 9 at 3:00 downstairs at the Carroll Gardens Library, 396 Clinton Street on the corner of Union, and Sun March 17 at 3:00, at the House of Pizza and Calzone at 132 Union Street. They'll be talking about fees, membership rights and responsibilities, and plans for the season. If you wish to renew your membership or become a new member, please make sure to attend one of the meetings.

Summit Street Garden Meeting this Sunday

Interested members and current members are invited to attend a Summit Street Community Garden meeting this Sunday morning. The meeting itself will last about 60 minutes, followed by at least an hour of workday for anyone interested. Anyone who wishes to be a member should attend the entire meeting and will get a walkthrough at the end. Happy gardening!

Sat, April 23rd - 3rd Anunual Egg Hunt at the Urban Meadow

Join us for our biggest hunt yet!

100 eggs and 2 hunting grounds:
- For little ones (0 to 4), the hunt will take place at the Urban Meadow
- For big kids (5 and up), the hunt will be next door, at Mother Cabrini Park

Both hunts will start promptly at 10:30, so get your basket and be on time!!

After enjoy some baked goods, coffee and face painting.
