Begun in 2013 as a much needed, community wide spirit lifter following Hurricane Sandy, the Red Hook Prom has brought together more community members, fly moves, sassy outfits and love than any other Cora event over the past five years. 2017 is RHP's 5th Anniversary and this dance party, and silent auction for grown-ups, supports the pay-what-you-can dance programs of Shannon Hummel/Cora Dance.

The evening is sponsored by and features a beauty station by Elements Hair Studio, performances by Shannon Hummel/Cora Dance students and professional dancers, a silent auction, and a photo booth by MVS Studios. Libations and snacks are provided by local Red Hook favorites - spiked punch and wine from dry dock and beer from Sixpoint Brewery.

Cora Dance is a small non-profit dance company and school that has been located in Red Hook for eight years. All of the dance programs and performances we offer are pay-what-you-can, providing all residents of the Red Hook community with access to dance experiences. Our mission: Through its company, studio and school, Cora creates exceptional dance experiences while addressing the impediments that restrict individuals from accessing the art form. Red Hook Fest (May 30 - June 1) Begins Festivities Tonight!

This evening kicks off the festivities for the 20th Annual Red Hook Fest! 

This free 20th annual festival's theme and truly Red Hook's undercurrent in the past months has been "Rebuild, Restore, Rebirth: Resilience after Sandy."  The annual Red Hook Earth and Surf Parade has even been reborn this year - after an 11 year lull! Fasten your corsage, put on your dancing shoes, and come celebrate the start of summer and show the invincible Red Hook the love (and party) it deserves. On Saturday, May 11 at 7pm, Red Hook, Brooklyn is having a prom like you’ve never seen. Come to South Brooklyn Community High School at 173 Conover Street, walk up to the gym and help us celebrate this amazing neighborhood.

The event, voluntarily produced by Red Hook’s own home/made (a restaurant and catering company), features delicious food, punch (spiked, just like we remember), sweet tunes by DJ Body Rock (yes, you read correctly) spinning 80’s jams and requests, dance lessons from Cora Dance pros, a photo booth, the knighting of Prom King and Queen- nominations are local "celebrities" including Dana Athens, Stella Dora, Reg Flowers, Solomon Goodwin among others, and many more surprises!!!

The evening’s performances include excerpts of Shannon Hummel/Cora Dance’s newest work "Bench" (with dancers Solomon Goodwin and Sarah Burke) part of a larger work to premiere in Spring 2014 in Red Hook.

In addition to performances, the evening will include a silent auction, with beginning bids ranging from $5 up to several hundred. Items include tickets to the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, spa packages, classes for kids and adults, vacation packages to the Berkshires and Disneyworld, and much much more!

The Red Hook Prom is the annual gala benefiting Cora Dance, a vital arts organization keeping Red Hook strong. We hope you will join us. All the proceeds of the evening go to support our 7 days a week of pay-what-you-can dance classes for ages 4 to 94+, as well as supporting the development of Red Hook’s first studio theater where the community can see our work, the work of other community artists and beyond.

Courtney Cooke's newest work "Steeper Beast" is a tightly structured
improvisation exploring research in the body as a vessel for hypnotic
states, trances, regressive behavior, relationships, and time travel.

About Katie Dean, (March 7 and 9 at 8pm)

Katie presents "Royal Jelly", an exploration of nostalgia, our
collections, the Golden Record, symmetry, iPhones, lust and randomness. A
Waiting for Godot-ish 20 or so minutes of the moments in between.
Performed by Airin Dalton, Megan Harrold, and Nadia Tykulsker. Sound
design created in collaboration with Heather Bregman. Set design in
collaboration with Michael Drake.

About the Cora Theater

The Cora Studio-Theater is an intimate 750 square foot performance space
which debuted as a theater in 2012. Home to the professional company
Shannon Hummel/Cora Dance and its educational program, Cora School for
Dance, the studio is a laboratory for addressing the impediments that keep
many underserved populations from taking part in the arts. The theater
will host over 20 evenings of live performance in 2013 by Cora Dance,
students, guest artists and others. All programs and performances at The

Spring Swing will take place on Saturday, May 7 at 7pm on the rooftop of Rocky Sullivan's Bar and Restaurant, 34 Van Dyke Street at the corner of Dwight Street in Red Hook, Brooklyn. The evening will feature catered food by Daniel Eardley/Knife for Hire (former head chef of Chestnut); neighborhood favorite The Good Fork (head chef, Sohui Kim); and many others. The night includes a silent auction, presentation for benefit honorees Donna Costello and Sara Coffey, and swinging french dance hall music by Primitivo.

Cora Dance Announces Upstart Festival Auditions

Now in its third year, this festival celebrates the budding talent of artists new to presenting their own choreographic work in NYC. Curated by Cora Dance Artistic Director, Shannon Hummel, and BAX Founding and Executive Director, Marya Warshaw, Upstart performances feature 12-14 dance artists over two to three evenings, all of whom have been choreographing less than three full years in the city. Artists are chosen through live audition and must demonstrate the seed of a distinctive artistic vision combined with the desire to connect deeply with that vision as a career path in the future.

In addition to performances, festival participants take part in an open roundtable event facilitated by Hummel aiming to help participants build relationships and connections between one another and the broader dance community.

BAX provides a modest stipend for each choreographer and participants receive discounted rehearsal space at The Cora Studio in Red Hook, Brooklyn leading up to the performance events.

TO APPLY:
Audition slots will be assigned through an open call-in on Friday December 3rd between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. on a first come/first served basis. Leave no messages, please.
Note: 2010-2011 Upstart Festival participants are not eligible to apply this year.

THE AUDITION:
Live auditions will be held on: Saturday December 18th 4:30 - 7:00 p.m. and Sunday December 19th from 2 - 8:00 p.m. Please come prepared to show 10-minutes of work or work-in-progress and talk briefly about the work and/or your process. (This may be the duration of the complete work or may be a section from a slightly longer work. Works selected for the festival may be no longer than 12 minutes.)

Shannon Hummel/Cora Dance presents informal performances of excerpts from the company's latest work-in-progress “Prey” in Coffey Park. Cora is building this eerie and elegant piece to travel over a mile through the diverse landscape of Red Hook at twilight into nighttime, meandering from the urban forest that is Coffey Park to the streets, playgrounds, shop windows and waterfront areas of the neighborhood... lit by the audience. For these informal showings, the company will present two sections, discuss the process and take audience members on a guided tour of the intended list of sites where the work will fully premiere in October 2011.

Prey is being developed through the support of a generous gift from Robert and Mary Beth Aberlin; through the 2008 Artist-in-Residence program of BAX/Brooklyn Arts Exchange; through the artist residency program of Vermont Performance Lab, with assistance from Marlboro College; and through the support of the 92nd Street Y.

Set in the cabaret stage of Rocky Sullivan's, an Irish bar complete with darts, pool tables, and Guinness on tap, this eclectic night of mini works highlights the diversity of styles and expressive range of the collaborators of Cora Dance. The BQE

The BQE - a movie inspired by the roadway that in many ways defines/confines our neighborhood - was released on DVD this week. And no, its not a documentary about the history of the expressway, but rather a musical and visual piece inspired by it, featuring epic music created by Sufjan Stevens and a group of hula-hoopers dancing throughout.

Hip Hop classes at Dance Etcetera

DTE is committed to expanding its space into a multi-use community arts center, and part of that plan involves eventually having an entire series of programming on Saturdays. Destination Red Hook: We Got What You Need

Brooklyn, NY – (April 24, 2009) Red Hook is the next destination neighborhood in NYC, but not for cheap Swedish meatballs or the newest big box giant. “Destination Red Hook: We Got What You Need,” the theme for this year’s version of the area’s annual summer kick-off, recognizes and celebrates the ‘hood’s many hidden gems. Come to the FREE Red Hook Waterfront Arts Festival at Louis J. Valentino, Jr. Park & Pier Friday, June 5^th (6pm-9pm) and Saturday, June 6^th (11am-7pm) to see what (and who) makes this unique waterfront neighborhood tick.

The Festival opens Friday at 6pm with a Youth Kick-Off Event & community sunset picnic with performances by RIOT ACT! Police-Teen Theater Project and South Brooklyn Community High School’s TheaterWorks program. Eat food from local community farm Added Value, prepared by students in SBCHS’s Cook for Life program, as you enjoy a sunset serenade from The Famous Accordion Orchestra. At 8pm the 5^th Annual Red Hook Youth Film Fest begins, screening award-winning films from Brooklyn’s brightest young stars.

Saturday’s Mainstage events begin at 11:00 am. This year the Festival goes local with a loco lineup of sizzling hot artists who have made their names around the globe before coming back home to the BK: tapping, rapping lyricist Joseph Webb (Bring in ‘Da Noise…) and his band Joseph; local favorites, The Red Hook Ramblers; Dr. Drum & Bomba-Yo; and dynamo DJ Chela (lauded as “the hottest female DJ in the country”).

Powerhouse professional companies PurElements: An Evolution in Dance and JoiLynn Productions rep the best the borough has to offer in dynamic movement and dance, while youth groups from around the city strut their stuff to keep up. The day ends with a sunset salsa party to the big band groove of the incomparable Willie Alvarez y Tromborí.

This year’s Red Hook Fest will stress the importance of community unity in the tough economic times we face. Dance Theatre Etcetera, the organization behind the Festival, will jam-pack the park with local resources from community partners: information about job training, health services, smarter banking, and much, much more.

The festival, as always, is FREE to the public, and will also feature kayaking in New York Harbor with The Red Hook Boaters, the best local food, and a host of other family-friendly activities.
