---------------
Due to devastating economic instability, Liberty Green NY Inc. can no longer financially afford to remain at its present location on Pier 41 and must vacate on March 31, 2011 or before. It hopes to find a new location so that its remarkable collection of plants, trees and flowers can survive along with its educational and environmental programs.
Friends of Liberty Green NY Inc. and residents of Red Hook and surrounding communities, are asking that Liberty Green NY INC. be granted an extension till May 31, 2011 to find an available and suitable new location where it can continue to serve Red Hook and the Brooklyn community as a whole.
So follow this link to support them.

The following was posted on the O'Connell face book page. You should do your homework before trying to help a business that hasn't paid their rent for a year. They deserve to be thrown out.
Why don't you blog about the homeless or the hungry. Why don't you blog about the lady who lived in the area for over 20 and is now living in the emergency room at LICH. She's on SSI and couldn't afford to pay her rent and was put out on the street. She has no family and no place to go. So she walks around during the day and sleeps at LCIH at night. I don't see anyone running to help her. Her story is not the first, this seems to happen alot in this area. New people move into the area and they push out the old timers. Very sad and a on going problem in the area. Give me a break here.
Mr. Gubis has had over a year to downsize and implement an exit strategy. We could have pursued eviction long ago but instead had countless meetings and handshakes and came to many agreements which were not fulfilled. We had no choice but to exhaust all legal options because we were forced into that position. After not being reimbursed for use of about 25,000 square feet of our property for over a year now we have come to the conclusion that this may never end if we continue to extend Liberty Sunset. They have had more than enough time to relocate and remove their property but instead have focused their efforts on pushing a 'rant' to local media badmouthing us as well as creating this petition. We appreciate their contributions to the community but they have tried to hurt our organization, have not held up their end of many agreements, and have been given more than enough time to relocate. We will take the community's input into consideration through this petition and through any sort of correspondence with our office but please keep in mind that the situation is more complicated than "just extend them a couple of extra months". Our trust has been violated and we have allowed them to operate without reimbursement for over a year, so please, try to take both sides of this unfortunate situation into account.

The Word on Columbia St. is a vessel for local organizations, individuals and activities to have a voice. They are only trying to bring to light the goings on of our community so don't fault them for receiving information on a petition of a business in the community and immediately posting information on it. I can imagine after reading the petition, the instant reaction would be to circulate it but in this case the tenant has not acted in admirable fashion. It's partly my fault for not informing others as to the other side of the story until a few days had gone by with this petition in circulation. Word On Columbia is a great neighborhood blog and it values impartiality which can be confirmed through reading many of their past posts.
