For those who haven't been paying attention, one of the hottest topics in the neighborhood lately is that the Environmental Protection Agency recently proposed to have the Gowanus Canal added to its list of Superfund sites, the Federal list of hazardous sites given priority and funding for cleanup.
Image from NYTimesIn summary, the State and the Federal Government are pushing for the site to be a Superfund site, while the Mayor and some other city officials are opposed to it, thinking it will get in the way of their existing plans and bring a bad stigma to the neighborhood. Residents seem to have mixed feelings.
