Garden Party Fundraiser for Brad Lander Tuesday evening

Neighbor Wylie Goodman shared this invite to a garden party fundraiser for Brad Lander. We here at Word on Columbia Street are big fans of Councilperson Lander and hope some of you can spring for a ticket for this special event.

Here is Wylie's message:

After working for three years for Partnerships for Parks, volunteering with Participatory Budgeting, and becoming more involved with our Community Board, I've come to appreciate what it means to have a Councilperson like Brad Lander on our side as a community. Brad is smart, hard-working, and, most importantly, dedicated to progressive causes and to improving the quality of life of the residents he serves. 

He helped fund the renovation of the DiMattina Dog Run.  He’s long supported the Brooklyn Greenway Initiative.  He spearheaded Participatory Budgeting, which allows locals to meaningfully contribute to capital projects for their community.  He’s helped foster the growth of our neighborhood’s small businesses. He’s advocated consistently and diligently for the creation of affordable housing.  And that’s just the beginning. 

On July 15th, there will be a garden party and fundraiser for Brad in honor of his 45th birthday.  Tickets are $100.  I know that may be a lot for some people.  It was for me, too. But in the end, I decided that all politics is local.  And if you want to have a voice in the politics of your community, you need to be at the table with the people who are representing on your behalf. 

If you can afford that amount, please consider attending what should be a truly special event.  And when you register, tell them you were referred by me.  I decided to go a step further and serve on the Host Committee.

Waterfront Museum Red Hook History Puppet Show

This year, the floating home of the Waterfront Museum turns 100. By following her history, the saga of commerce, transportation and the lives of the people of the working harbor unfold. "Out of the Box" tells the story of this bustling era in NYC history before bridges and tunnels. Based on true stories using maps, models, and puppets, the show aims to entertain and enlighten audiences about what this last-surviving wooden barge carried through the eyes of a barge captain's daughter who grew up on it.

Maritime scholars and almost a dozen old-timers add their oral histories and historical accuracy to the project. The leaders of "Out of the Box" are Deborah Kauffman, a physical actor and puppeteer, Stephen Kaplin director and puppeteer, Alma Sheppard-Matsuo, puppeteer and David Sharps, captain of Lehigh Valley #79 and a former entertainer aboard cruise ships.  

The project is funded in part by the NY Council for the Humanities and the Brooklyn Arts Council NYSCA Regrant Program.

Celebrating Red Hook, Saturday July 12

A lot of fun stuff happening in Red Hook this weekend! Saturday, July 12th from noon to 10 pm there's the Celebrating Red Hook festival, a day of "Music, Art and Red Hook Manufacturing" in Erie Basin Park, behind IKEA. Admission is free!

The Red Hook Star-Revue, South Brooklyn's community newspaper, in collaboration with IKEA and Fairway Markets present "Celebrating Red Hook" featuring over thirty local Red Hook businesses showing off their work. In addition, there will be a stage where a full day of music and dance will be presented. Finally, at dusk, IKEA's annual fireworks display will dazzle the Brooklyn waterfront. All performers live or work in the Red Hook area, and participating merchants and institutions include NY Water Taxi, the Carroll Gardens Association, Red Hook Initiative, Fleisher's Pasture-Raised Meats, Leicht German Kitchen Center, Casa Kids, Art & Anvil Liberty, Fairway, Pitt Cooking Display, Red Hook Winery, and Nat Sherman tobacconists, who operate a pop up store in Red Hook every summer. There will be plenty of sampling as well as items for sale.

Story time and music at Summit Street Garden Sunday afternoon

Please bring yourselves and your little ones by Summit Street Garden tomorrow from 1:30pm - 2:30pm for story time and music making!

Children's librarian and garden member Andrea Vaughn Johnson (that would be me!) will perform a story time beginning at 1:30pm. Story time will be followed by an interactive music class for the children led by Sesame Street bass player and garden member, Rob Jost. The music class will be suitable for children of all ages.

This will be a very informal event for garden members and our community at large; simply some Sunday neighborhood fun. Bring a blanket and your favorite little ones (and if they have an instrument, bring it along!).

Local Make Music New York Events

Make Music New York is a free one-day music festival that takes place all over the city on June 21st. Anyone can take part or attend this Do-It-Yourself style festival. The goal is to get as many people outside, making music together, as possible.

We were all affected by the heartbreaking tragedy that unfolded this Monday when fourteen year old Nicholas Soto passed away after being fatally struck by a vehicle as he tried to catch his school bus.

Red Hook Jazz Fest at the Urban Meadow June 8 and 15

One of our great local events and organized by residents of the Columbia Waterfront District, the Red Hook Jazz Festival is this Sunday, June 8 at the Urban Meadow Community Garden, 1 pm - 6pm. David Adler, at the Village Voice jazz blog just called it One of the 10 Best Jazz Shows This Month and wrote that "The lineup seems to get better every year at the Red Hook Jazz Festival. These bands have widely varying instrumentation but a shared independent spirit, an ethic as purposeful and rigorous as it is experimental."

The shows will be this Sunday, June 8th and next Sunday June 15. Bring your picnic blankets and your kids and hang out to listen to some of the best music around! There's something for everyone - Time Out NY's listing says the Red Hook Jazz Festival is the "rare music fest that's both family-friendly and cutting-edge"
