Billion Oyster Project - Volunteers Needed

Billion Oyster Project is looking for volunteers - do you have a flexible schedule to help out?

Their 2018 Public Volunteer Season is now open and accepting applications. Volunteer days are every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday at 10am on Governor's Island.

Volunteers must be 13 years or older and will help build wire mesh reef structures, oyster cages, wash and prepare recycled shells, maintain the oyster nursery, monitor oyster reefs and more.

Community Gardening Anyone?

Spring has already sprung but it isn't too late to join a local community garden. Here are two ways to sign up for a piece of soil or just become a member....

THE SUMMIT STREET COMMUNITY GARDEN

According to their bulletin board the next meeting and work day is Sunday June 9th at 11am and their meeting poster says that anyone wishing to be a member can attend the meeting and sign up on the spot afterwards. Here are links to their blog and facebook page.

THE BACKYARD COMMUNITY GARDEN

The Backyard Community Garden is actively soliciting for new members for empty plots. Members requirements and sign up info can be requested currently from Tom Kerr (347) 661-9728 - Garden membership coordinator. One of their members has set up a lovely blog and they hope to increase membership this year.

We truly have so much green space in this neighborhood compared to other parts of NYC - so get out there and

Volunteer and Donation Needs in Red Hook Cleanup and Park Slope Shelters

Volunteer and Donation Needs this Weekend

The Park Slope Armory shelter (361 15th Street, between 7th & 8th Avenues) needs volunteers who can work at least an 8 hour shift, longer would be great. Shifts start at 8 AM and 8 PM. If they have too many volunteers, you may be turned away, so be prepared for that.

The John Jay High School shelter (237 7th Avenue, between 4th & 5th Streets) needs day, evening, and overnight volunteers this weekend (especially, but not only, people with medical training). You need to be able to dedicate at least 6-8 hours and cannot bring your children.

There is still a huge need for your help in Red Hook (and thank you to everyone who has already volunteered). Here are several opportunities over the weekend:

I am very happy to report that the Office of Emergency Management has set up an office in Red Hook at 402 Van Brunt Street. At 10 AM on Saturday, they are looking for 100 volunteers to assist with cleanup efforts. Please bring tools, work gloves, and be prepared to get a little dirty.

Added Value, the Red Hook community farm (480 Columbia Street, across the street from IKEA) sustained extensive damage during the storm. About 100 volunteers will be working throughout the morning and will need a hot lunch. They are asking any kind souls to bring hot, cooked food to the farm at 1 PM on Saturday. Also, their computers were destroyed by Sandy and the farm would really appreciate a donation of an old computer or smart phone.

Red Hook Initiative has been doing amazing work this week on behalf of this community in need. They would still appreciate volunteers (at 767 Hicks Street) and donations of flashlights, ice, and medical supplies (but no clothes). Call 718-858-6782 for details.


Jalopy on Columbia Street is also accepting donations of: candles, lanterns or flashlights that can be worn or hung up, hand warmers, garbage bags, rubber gloves, batteries, buckets, towels, and warm blankets

Donate to Carroll Gardens Library for their May 19 Sale

Friends of Carroll Gardens Library is now accepting donations for their May 19 Love Your Library Day Book Sale and Community Celebration. 


Yes, you can donate:
New or used books
CDs, DVDs and records
Children's books, CDs, DVDs
Journals
Current textbooks


No thanks to: Damaged books without covers; tape cassettes or VHS videos; coloring books or activity books; magazines; outdated textbooks and computer manuals.

Donations will be collected through May 9 at only the following times: Saturdays 10:30 to 12 noon, Wednesdays 6 to 8 p.m., and Fridays 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Enter through the main doors on Clinton Street and bring your donations go downstairs through the auditorium or take the elevator on the Union Street side to the basement.

Friends of Carroll Gardens Libraries also needs volunteers to help accept donations, sort and organize books, and staff the sale. Sign up here!

Annual Tag Sale at Amazing Garden this Weekend

"The Amazing Garden" is having their annual tag sale this Saturday - 10am until stuff runs out. There will also be baked goods this year along with their usual furniture, books, CDs, knick-knacks, toys, and small appliances.

All proceeds go to benefit the garden, which is exclusively volunteer run - and open for public enjoyment.They just added a brand new brick wall along the front edge of the garden that includes additional seating, which should be great for movie nights later this season.

So support your local community garden, check out the sale, and enjoy!

New plantings along the greenway / cleanup day on 12/12

Thanks to all of the volunteers who recently helped plant some new grass seed along the Columbia St. stretch of the Greenway. We can't wait to see how it looks when it starts growing!

Here is a description of the event where this took place, as well as information about an upcoming cleanup day, from the Greenway website:

"On the weekend of November 21-22, 2009, a half-dozen energetic and hearty greenway volunteers worked to prep the site and plant it with a native grass seed mix. The existing weed root systems were extensive and deep, but perseverance prevailed! Most of the work involved completely digging out the root systems in a compacted gravel and clay mix, complete with bricks, concrete and tar pieces...."

"The team finished the area from Degraw Street to Sedgwick Street, and will continue further north along Columbia Street as part of Brooklyn Greenway Initiative’s next cleanup, to be held Saturday, December 12th. Keep an eye out for the results in the spring!"

Summer cleanup at our local dog park

Dear Brooklyn Dog Friends,

Join the Carroll Garden's Dog Owners Group at our local dog park Miro's Run for the Summer Cleanup on Sunday, July 19 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.

We'll be doing a lot of weeding and sweeping the surface. Cleanup supplies will be provided by Partnership for Parks.

Come meet your neighbors and help make the dog park a prettier place for us all. Dogs welcome!

Miro's Run is located in DiMattina Park, on Hicks Street between Hamilton Avenue and Rapelye Street.
